Hypnosis and Tinnitus - Can it work for me?

How can Hypnosis help my Tinnitus?

The condition called Tinnitus (tin·ni·tus) and the American Tinnitus Association estimates that over 50 million Americans suffer from it, 12 million of them will go ahead and seek medical attention. Most of them will be medically untreatable.

What causes Tinnitus?

  • Hearing Loss due to aging
  • Onetime exposure to high intensity sounds
  • Prolonged noise-induced hearing loss
  • Otosclerosis, which is an accumulation of calcium in the middle ear
  • Infections that can be viral, bacterial, or fungal in nature
  • Autoimmune hearing loss
  • Meniere’s disease, which is an abnornally high inner ear pressure
  • Acoustic neuroma, which is a tumor or growth
  • Vascular hypertension
  • Hyper or hypothyroidism
  • Head or neck injury
  • Ototoxic Medications such as some antibiotics or diuretics
  • Heavy metal poisoning

Solving the problem is a combination or understanding tinnitus and the stress factors involved and forming a plan to allow habituation to occur in the brain.  First, we have to habituate the reaction to the sound then we look for a reduction in perception.

HYPERACUSIS

Hyperacusis is a hearing condition.  Hyperacusis is a debilitating and rare hearing disorder characterized by an increased sensitivity to certain frequencies and volume ranges of sound. A person with severe hyperacusis has difficulty tolerating everyday sounds, some of which may seem very unpleasant or painfully loud to that person but not to others.  Some studies have shown that slow incremental increase in pink noise at moderate volume over time is helpful to that desensitization process.  Remember that the subconscious has to determine what sensory information is important or represents a threat and, therefore, decidewhat to bring into conscious awareness.

SHOULD I BE FEARFUL?

Frequently the fear is the result of negative counseling from healthcare professionals who may advise you to “check for a brain tumor” or indicate that there is nothing that can be done with the rinnitus and the patient is told to “learn to live with it.”  But many times the patient is sent home with little hope because they are not told how to live with it.  Tinnitus is commonly present in the client and evokes a strong negative emotional reaction, resulting in the focusing of the neuronal networks detecting the tinnitus signal itself.
